勘误　　与之前所有人的共识不同，约翰·皮尔彭特并不是这首曲子的作者，并且也没有很坎坷的经历。现有的故事是来自Robert Flughum的"It Was on Fire When I Lay Down on It"（2006年出版），但该故事面世伊始就遭到了强烈的抨击——因为作者为了达到感人的效果而不惜歪曲历史，将约翰·皮尔彭特先生写成一个失败者（相关资料见附录）。事实上，皮尔彭特先生是一个才华横溢的诗人与声名远播的教育家（参见维基百科），只有他晚年的生活不甚如意。故事里写他早年就穷困潦倒，这不符合史实——1821年时他就因在Boston's English Classical School建立过程中做出的贡献而受到全国的关注，同时他也并非耶鲁大学毕业——先在巴尔的摩读书，后来到了哈佛。另外，在文学方面他也并非平庸之辈：他的宣扬废除奴隶制的诗歌经常被人朗诵，同时他与人合著的剧本也受到了热烈欢迎。

　　It seems that the facts of the above story are not quite right and I have received more than one email informing me of the mistake. The latest, received 9 April 2004, reads:
