Jingle Bells

It Was on Fire When I Lay Down on It"(2006年出版),但该故事面世伊始就遭到了强烈的抨击——因为作者为了达到感人的效果而不惜歪曲历史,将约翰·皮尔彭特先生写成一个失败者(相关资料见附录)。

Dashing through the snow

In a one horse open sleigh

  O'er the fields we go

  Laughing all the way

Bells on bob taila[›] ring (Or Hear our voices ring)

  Making spirits bright

What fun it is to laugh and sing (Or What fun it is to ride and sing)

  A sleighing song tonight

  (chorus)

  |: Jingle bells, jingle bells,

  Jingle all the way;

Oh! what fun [joy] it is to ride

  In a one-horse open sleigh.:| (开头,现在通行的版本就这一点)

  A day or two ago

  I thought I'd take a ride

  And soon Miss Fanny Bright

  Was seated by my side,

The horse was lean and lank

  Misfortune seemed his lot

He got into a drifted bank

And then we [we—we] got upsotb[›].

  A day or two ago,

  The story I must tell

I went out on the snow,

  And on my back I fell;

  A gent was riding by

  In a one-horse open sleigh,

He laughed as there I sprawling lie,

  But quickly drove away.

  Now the ground is white

  Go it while you're young,

  Take the girls tonight

  and sing this sleighing song;

Just get a bob tailed bay

Two fortyc[›] as [for] his speed

[and] Hitch him to an open sleigh

And crack! you'll take the lead.

The Failure Story of John Pierpont"(By Robert Fuglem),刊登在http://www.richardseah.com/blbook/failure.html 上,在故事的最后刊登者写了一个附注,原文如下:

  "PS: An inaccuracy

It seems that the facts of the above story are not quite right and I have received more than one email informing me of the mistake. The latest, received 9 April 2004, reads:

Mr. Fulghum is totally inaccurate in the facts he used in his story.

  Poor research = poor author!!

My great grandfather, James Lord Pierpont is the composer of "Jingle Bells". John Pierpont was his father, my great great grandfather. He was hardly considered a failure. If you will research his life, you will find you are wasting your sympathies!

  Very truly yours,

  Constance Turner

The inaccuracy somewhat dimishes the value of the story of John Pierpont. But since this essay is about how the story affected me, I've decided to retain it here."

"Contrary to some inaccurate histories and attributions, John Pierpont was not the author of the Christmas song “Jingle Bells”; its author was his son, James Lord Pierpont (1822-1893)"
